Having one or more programmable thermostats greatly increases the amount of control you have over the comfort level in your house. It also give you the ability to monitor and adjust how much energy you use, even when you aren’t at home.
Without a thermostat, many people will either turn off their HVAC system when they leave the house or leave it on the entire time they’re gone. If you are gone eight or nine hours a day to work, you’re wasting a lot of energy and money to keep an empty house comfortable. And if you do turn it off, you have to return to an uncomfortable home and wait for your HVAC system to return the house to a comfortable level.
Installing a programmable thermostat will solve both of these problems. You can program it to turn off shortly after you leave for work so you aren’t wasting energy. It can also be programmed to turn back on shortly before you return so the temperature is right where you want it. You can even set it so that it takes weekends into account and won’t shut off if you stay home on Saturdays and Sundays.
By having your HVAC system set to a more energy-efficient mode while you’re away during the week, you can reduce your energy use by up to 30 percent. These are savings that you will see immediately and will quickly offset the cost of the thermostat.
Some of the more modern programmable thermostats have other features that put you in control and help you save money as well. Some will remind you when it’s time to change your air filters, which helps your HVAC system stay running efficiently. Certain models can connect to the Internet and will display weather forecasts on the control panel.
