Weatherizing Your Home Is Easy -- With These 3 Expert TipsLos Angeles has some of the most ideal year-round outdoor temperatures in the world. During the warmer summer months, however, nothing feels better than walking into a cool house. Weatherizing your home helps your air conditioner run more efficiently and maintain the cool inside temperature. When you want to weatherize your home, start with these three expert tips.

Check for air leaks
When a home has air leaks, an air conditioner has to work harder to maintain the cool temperature inside. The first step in weatherizing your home is to look for air leaks, which can occur at outside water faucets, window and door frames, fans, air vents, attic hatches, air conditioner ducts, recessed lights and between the walls and foundation. You may also find air leaks where cables and vents go through the interior and exterior walls. If you’re not sure about how to find air leaks in your home, contact an HVAC contractor that provides home energy evaluation services.

Weatherstripping
Use weatherstripping, which comes in a variety of forms, around the inside of edges of door and window frames. Then install door sweeps on the bottom of attic and basement doors, as well as doors that lead to the outside of your home. Consult with a home energy expert about the best type of weatherstripping to use in each area of your home.

Caulking
Use caulk to seal air leaks around the outside edges of window frames, recessed lights and cracks in exterior walls. Then caulk around all penetrations where cable, water, telephone, gas and electrical lines enter your home. Ask a pro about the right caulk to use.
