In the summer in Southern California, the hottest days can be sweltering. Adding in the humidity makes a one-two punch that can be downright dangerous for some people. Air conditioning has made great strides in quality and efficiency. One of the best advances in air conditioning technology is the two-stage cooling system.
A two-stage cooling system in your home is efficient because unlike single-stage units, the air compressor essentially has two different gears. When the temperature is milder, the compressor can run at a lower capacity, keeping the home cooled evenly with longer, energy-saving cooling cycles. When it’s hotter or more humid, the system can kick into high-capacity mode to compensate for the additional workload. The good thing is that your unit will run at low capacity approximately 80 percent of the time.
These units are efficient in other ways as well. Since they can run in low-capacity mode for longer periods, they are better at whole-house dehumidification and don’t require the constant stopping and starting of single-stage units. This also eliminates the sudden burst of cool air you often experience when a single-stage unit kicks into gear, which means your space will be more consistently comfortable.
