Air Conditioner Installation Requires Technical Expertise -- Or Performance DipsYou can’t get through a triple-digit summer in Los Angeles without A/C. And with the air running so often, you can’t afford not to be energy conscious. So you shop around to make sure you’re buying the most energy-efficient system. It has the Energy Star logo, guaranteed to save you money. So you’re all set, right? Not if it isn’t properly installed. If your air conditioner isn’t installed correctly, its energy efficiency can be reduced by up to 30 percent. In addition, improper air conditioner installation may actually cause damage to the unit.

Fortunately, there is a solution. The federal Energy Star program, in addition to its rigorous standard for appliance efficiency, also sets a standard for air conditioner installation. When hiring a contractor to install your air conditioner, always ask if they meet the Energy Star Quality Air Conditioner Installation guidelines. Getting an Energy Star Quality Installation ensures:

  • Proper sizing and placement of equipment. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. A contractor who meets Energy Star’s installation standard will work with you to make sure your A/C is the most efficient size for your home. They’ll also make sure your ductwork is sealed to minimize leakage, and your unit is tilted properly to allow proper drainage and prevent leaks.
  • Correct refrigerant charge. Many A/C’s are installed with too little refrigerant, which forces the unit to work harder and use more energy. An Energy Star Quality Installation includes making sure your refrigerant is at the proper level or “charge.”
  • Optimal airflow. Much like the refrigerant charge, if you don’t have enough airflow, the unit needs to work harder to compensate.
  • Proper maintenance instruction. A contractor who meets Energy Star’s standard won’t just install your air conditioner. They’ll show you how to change the air filter, advise you on how often maintenance should be done, and help you to keep your air conditioner running at top energy efficiency for years to come.
