For many LA and North Hollywood homeowners, air conditioner replacement is only slightly more enjoyable than air conditioning failure — that is, it’s no fun at all. But with a few key questions, fast air conditioner replacement can be a breeze and you’ll be confident that your new unit is optimized to suit your unique household needs.

The first step is to narrow your replacement options:

  • What are your financial limitations? A new system can be a significant expense, so knowing just how much you can afford will help. Be sure to ask about rebates, tax credits and payment options.
  • What type of system can your home support? If you have ductwork, central air is a viable option, even if your old unit wasn’t centralized. Without ductwork, you’ll probably be looking at a ductless mini split system.
  • Do you understand efficiency ratings? Your new unit’s efficiency will impact your utility bills for the life of the equipment, so you should have a basic understanding of ratings. See pages 8-9 of our Home Comfort Solutions Guide for a detailed explanation of energy ratings.
  • What size unit is optimal for your home? The only way to properly size your new unit is by calculating your home’s heat load using Manual J, a complex process best left to a technician, but well worth it in long-term savings and performance.

Selecting a qualified contractor is just as important as selecting a replacement unit:

  • Does the contractor have a good reputation? Ask friends or neighbors, look up Better Business Bureau ratings, and find out which certifications and licenses the contractor holds.
  • Will the contractor inspect your home and make recommendations? Any contractor willing to install a cooling system without knowing your home’s heat load is suspect. You have the final say, but your contractor should offer helpful advice if he or she spots potential improvements.
  • Does the contractor offer guarantees or warranties? Sometimes even the highest-quality systems and installations go awry. Will your contractor be there for you if something goes wrong?
