If you have been putting off a heating and cooling upgrade due to budget concerns, consider the financial benefits of the 2011 federal energy-based tax credits. While not quite as generous as the tax credits of 2010, you can still save a great deal on your initial investment and reap the long-term benefits of an efficiency upgrade. Consider a few of your options:
- A tax credit of $300 is available on qualifying air source heat pumps. To be eligible, the model you choose must have minimum 15 SEER, 12.5 EER and 8 HSPF ratings.
- Also eligible for $300 back are central air conditioners. Qualifying models require a minimum 16 SEER and 13 EER.
- Oil, propane and natural gas furnaces may qualify for a tax credit of $150 if they carry an AFUE rating of at least 95 percent.
- Also eligible for a tax credit of $150 are oil, propane and natural gas hot water boilers. To qualify, boilers should carry an AFUE rating of at least 95 percent.
- If your new furnace includes an air blower that uses less than 2 percent of total energy consumption, you may also qualify for a tax credit of $50.
Thanks to the 2011 federal energy-based tax credits, you can upgrade your HVAC system efficiency at an affordable price, improve the comfort of your home and reduce your energy costs over the long term.
