As the ninth largest city in Los Angeles County, Pasadena has a population of over 139,000 residents. It was one of the first Los Angeles County cities to be incorporated in 1886. Pasadena is part of the original land grant for Mexico that was deeded on Easter Sunday. The Rancho del Rincon de San Pascual comprised the lands occupied by the modern communities of Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Altadena.
Before it was annexed in 1848, the land was last held by Manuel Garfias, who sold the property in sections to the first Anglo settlers in the area. Between 1886 and 1941 Pasadena was hailed as a popular resort town. The growth explosion resulting from the building of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line encouraged a real estate boom, and tourist hotels were developed. Pasadena was established as a winter resort for the wealthy, which encouraged further development. By 1940, Pasadena was widely considered to be a twin city to Los Angeles and was the eighth largest city in the state.
Today, Pasadena is known as the host of the Tournament of Roses parade and Rose Bowl football game. It is also home to a myriad of cultural and scientific institutions including Caltech.
