There are plenty of things that you need to deal with during an emergency; a power outage in your Los Angeles home does not have to be one of them. Let’s face it, when faced with a crisis, the last thing you want to have to worry about is your electricity. Having a standby generator installed will give you peace of mind and let you focus on taking care of your family.
A portable generator can be used to power a small portion of your home, but they are much more limited in capacity than a whole-house generator that’s been installed by a certified HVAC technician. To be able to power your air conditioner and other essential electrical systems you may be better off with a whole-house system.
Tips for choosing and using your standby generator:
- Discuss with your technician what your power needs during a power outage will be before installation. Don’t forget to factor in air conditioner use. This will help you choose the right size for your home.
- Keep it simple, and take care that you don’t plug too many things in while you are running on backup power.
- Be sure that the area around your generator is free from debris, or anything that would keep your standby generator from running the way that it should.
- A standby generator should not be operated in an enclosed area of the home.
A whole-house generator is a piece of equipment that we all hope that we’ll never need to use, but if and when that time comes, you need it to work perfectly. For that reason, it’s wise to keep up with scheduled maintenance. You should have the system checked out by a certified technician every year to ensure that it will work flawlessly when you really need it. In an emergency, you’ll be glad you made the effort.
