Living in Los Angeles means rarely having to be concerned about severe weather conditions, but when nature does attack, it is with a vengeance. Major storms and flooding have caused enough damage and loss of life in the past to prove that residents should always be prepared with an emergency plan for power outages and supplies for several days at the very least.
Severe weather safety begins by avoiding downed trees and power lines as well as flooded areas. Assume any downed wire is live and report it immediately by calling 911 and, if possible, the power company’s emergency phone number.
Maintain emergency supplies for your family and pets that you can access hastily in case of evacuation. Include a supply of medications for anyone requiring prescription drugs. Pack a change of clothes and shoes for each family member. Include toiletries and personal care supplies. Make up a food box with non-perishable items and enough water for three days to a week. Be sure to include an alternative cooking source and a manual can opener.
An emergency box should include a first aid kit, a portable radio, flashlights and electric lanterns with a generous supply of batteries. Pack an adjustable wrench to turn off gas and water. Include a box of utility candles and matches as well as chlorine bleach and water purification instructions.
Consider any special needs that are family specific such as a soft toy to comfort a small child. Family pets will need food, carriers, leashes and dishes for food and water. Make sure you include any medications your pets require.
