Classic Southern California weather is upon us, which means your air conditioner is going to start going above and beyond its call of duty especially with global warming changes . With temperatures regularly in the nineties and now OFTEN in the 100’s , you’re going to need your beloved air conditioning system to be operating at its best. A Quick Air Conditioning Efficiency Checklist

Do You Know How Your System Works?

When getting your air conditioning system ready for the summer, it’s important to be aware of how your system works. Most air conditioning systems have two types of ducts: supply and return ducts. They do what you might think they do. Supply ducts help spread air throughout your home, and return ducts regulate the air flow, keeping the set temperature maintained. These are integral to the success and efficiency of your air conditioning system.

Outside of knowing how your system operates, there are a couple other aspects of your system to check to ensure optimum cooling.

Have You Switched or Cleaned Your Filters?

Regular maintenance is key to increasing the efficiency of your air conditioning system. What’s the first step in regular maintenance? Changing out your filters. This is a routine task that must be done in order to maintain the efficiency of your system. If your filter is clogged or dirty, it will reduce the airflow and carry dirt into the coils of the system.

If you have a central air system in your home, your filters can be located in a number of places. Everywhere from your walls, ceilings, and even the air conditioner itself may contain filters. If you have a room air conditioner or a mini-split, your filter will be mounted on the system itself, facing the inside of the room.

There are also various types of filters in use. Some filters are reusable while some need to be replaced. For maximum efficiency, you want to change out your filters every month or so. However, depending on conditions, the more frequently you change your filters the better. For example, if you live in dustier conditions or have pets that shed, consider changing your filters more often.

Are Your Fins Bent?

Coiling fins are also an important part of your air conditioning system. These help with the cooling part of your system. Overtime, these can bend and they will reduce the entire cooling efficiency of your system if left this way. For a quick fix at home there is a “fin comb” that can help comb out the bends and bring them back to their original state. These tools are available for purchase at a local air conditioner wholesale store or online.

What About Your Settings?

Lastly, keeping your fan setting on “auto” will help maintain your efficiency. There is a big difference between leaving your fan “on” versus on “auto.” Leaving your fan on “auto” means that it automatically works only when your home needs to be cooled or heated. Therefore, if your home reaches the temperature of your thermostat, the fan stops.

Leaving your fan “on” means it will remain on regardless of the temperature of your house. By leaving your fan on this setting you will not only increase your electric bill but you can also clog your air filters because of the continuous airflow.

If you run into other issues beyond this, it might be necessary to call in a professional. Beyond regular maintenance repairs, a professional technician can help make sure your system is running properly, especially during the hot months ahead for you and your fellow Angelinos.
