Temperatures in Los Angeles can vary from week to week, even throughout the winter. You may need heat one week and cooling the next, which can make regulating the temperature in your home difficult. One way to help regulate the temperature in your home and maximize energy savings is through the use of a programmable thermostat.
A programmable thermostat allows you to set the desired temperature for your home for when you are at home, and an energy-saving temperature for while you’re away. You can program the settings automatically to change temperature at different times of day, which makes regulating home temperature and energy consumption much easier. However, if you do not use your programmable thermostat setting properly, you may not be saving all of the money you can on energy costs.
Use the following guidelines to maximize your energy savings this season:
- Find a comfortable temperature for when you are at home. Try lowering the temperature just one or two degrees to save energy and money.
- Program the thermostat to lower the temperature in your home 8-10 degrees while you are away (during colder weather). Start the lower temperature right before you leave for the day, and start the warming process just before you arrive home.
- Program the thermostat to lower the temperature by 8-10 degrees at night as well. Set the temperature to rise back to the comfortable level just before you wake up.
- Allow the lower temperature settings to remain for at least eight hours at a time for maximum energy savings.
- When the outside temperature is warm, switch the temperature settings. Set the temperature 8-10 degrees higher in hot weather.
- Change the batteries in the thermostats once a year to ensure they work properly throughout the year.
