Preparing For A Plumbing EmergencySmall plumbing problems can lead to pricey repair bills. Many homeowners are simply not prepared for a plumbing emergency. They don’t take the steps necessary or consider the possibility that something might go wrong in their Los Angeles-area home.

A plumbing emergency can damage your valuables
If you experience a bad leak or, in a worse case scenario, a burst pipe, you might be looking at more than damage to your floors, wall or ceiling. Other damages might include pretty much anything that is in the lower levels of your home, especially your basement.

The best course of action to prevent damage to your valuables is to avoid keeping them in these lower levels. Although a basement is often used for storage, you’re taking a risk by leaving items down there, especially keepsakes and antiques that may be impossible to replace.

Shelves can help prevent further damage
If you’re limited in space, a basement or lower level might be your only choice for storage of your valuables. If this is the case, you should use high shelves for these items. That way, if there is a flood and the water damage is considerable, there is a much lower chance that the water level will reach your valuables. A tall cabinet is a great choice for this purpose, and will even help you save space.

Know your locations
Homeowners often don’t take the time to learn where their home’s main valve is located. If a plumbing emergency occurs in your Los Angeles-area home, the first thing you’ll want to do is shut off the water. Of course, this is hard to do if you have no idea where the valve is located. And with water pouring out at a terrifying rate, the faster you can do this, the better.
