Los Angeles homes certainly aren’t cheap, which is one reason why it’s so important to keep them running smoothly throughout the year. We’ve compiled some great fall home maintenance tips below that you can use to improve your energy efficiency and the overall appearance of your L.A. home:
- Service your furnace — An annual tune-up of your equipment by a licensed HVAC professional will keep your furnace’s efficiency working at a high level, thereby lowering your energy usage and monthly bills. Plus, your system will last longer.
- Exterior analysis — Take a look at the exterior of your home and determine if any work needs to be done, such as the replacement of bricks, siding, trim or stucco. Also check your outdoor electrical receptacles to make sure they’re watertight. This is the best time to do this kind of work thanks to the better weather of the season.
- Change your filter — Once your furnace’s air filter gets dirty, its performance will wane. The filter should be changed as it gets dirty, which usually occurs every one-two months.
- Test your generator — It hasn’t been too many years since the Los Angeles area experienced rolling blackouts, so it’s always a good idea to purchase a generator and test it a few times each year, just to be sure you’re prepared.
- Clean above — More than likely, your gutters and downspouts have become clogged up with leaves and other debris over the summer, so you should definitely clear those out. And while you’re up there, check your chimney and shingles for any damage.
- Clean below — Venture into your crawlspace and check for any standing water. This can be a great place for mold to develop, the spores of which can make their way into your home and damage your indoor air quality. Also evict any creatures that might call this area their home.
