Choosing the best insulation for your home can be confusing. Fiberglass and cellulose are the two main types of insulates used among HVAC professionals. Both types are inexpensive and both have somewhat comparable R-values (a measure of insulation’s effectiveness), although cellulose is considered somewhat more efficient by some professionals.

Benefits of Insulating With Fiberglass
Fiberglass may have a slight advantage when it comes to flammability, because it is made of ground glass which won’t burn. It is faced with paper that is flammable, however. Fiberglass insulation, which is usually installed by placing rolls or batts, is easier to install than cellulose. You can do the work yourself, although is it recommended to get the services of an HVAC company, as sloppily installed insulation can reduce its effectiveness. Cutting the batts to accommodate pipes or wiring in the attic and making sure the installation is not leaving air leaks can be a challenge. Also fiberglass is lighter than cellulose for the same R-value.
Advantages of Using Cellulose
There are a few benefits to using cellulose insulation instead of fiberglass. Residents of colder climates sometimes choose cellulose, because fiberglass loses heat quickly in extreme temperatures. While it is more flammable, it is treated with a chemical that retards flames, and cellulose is much better at slowing air as it passes through the insulation. Neither of these types will stop air completely; they will need to be combined with an air barrier, but cellulose does a better job at stopping it alone.
