Pros and Cons for the Two Main Types of Home Generators
“Standby” generators are permanently installed in a home and will usually start up on their own when the power goes out. “Portable” generators typically run on gasoline and need to be started manually. Each has their pros and cons:
- Standby Pros – This type needs minimal interaction for start-up and runs on propane or natural gas. There is also less risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Cons – Standby generators are typically more expensive and are more complicated to install.
- Portable Pros – This type is less expensive than standbys and is more flexible in its use, including taking it on trips (such as camping).
- Cons – Portable generators need to be manually started and have a higher risk of carbon monoxide issues. To reduce the CO risk, keep the gas powered machines at least 10 feet away from your home when in use.

When it comes to generators, one size does not fit all. It is important that a homeowner understand how to purchase one that will “fit” his or her home’s size and electrical needs. Speaking with an authorized dealer will ensure that you are choosing a model that will provide enough power, without overpaying for wattage you don’t need. If you are planning on buying a portable generator, be sure to choose one of the types that are created to minimize the risk of carbon monoxide gas poisoning, as well.
