Air conditioners are rated on how well they use energy to cool your house. The rating is called SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), and since 2006, all newly-manufactured air conditioners must have a SEER rating of at least 13.
Since old systems may have ratings of 6 or worse, upgrading to a new high-efficiency air-conditioning system can mean big savings in your utility bills over the summer and throughout the year.
For a sampling of the SEER ratings on air conditioners from top manufacturers, check out this page on Around The Clock’s website. The noise rating is included on all units as well. And for more information on SEER and high-efficiency air conditioning, visit the Department of Energy’s Energy Star site.
In addition to saving money on bills, many utility companies — including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power — offer rebates to consumers who swap out their older systems for high-efficiency air conditioning. Details on the LADWP program are online. The program will end when all funds are distributed, so your best bet is to take action right away. (You may remember that the state of California had a similar rebate program, but all of its funds were given away by the end of 2010.)
