Christmas is a wonderful time for home decorating. Like the song says, it’s about “making spirits bright.” But are there energy-saving tips to keep your home warm and festive without breaking the bank? The answer is yes. Let’s get saving!
AA Light Switch – Change to LED Holiday Lights
Christmas lights are key to holiday spirit. LED lights use 90 percent less energy than traditional lights, and the prices have dropped as the technology has become more popular. Plus, they look great!
Candlelight – Decorate With the Warm Glow of Candles
Candles make dinners, and evenings at home cozy and warm. A variety of sizes scattered throughout a room provides ambient light, and can replace traditional lighting for a romantic evening. Worried about fire risk with kids or pets? Try the battery-operated versions now available as pillars and tea-lights.
Keep Limited “Festive Hours”
You’re good at turning out lights, so just extend that to your holiday décor. Limit the time you leave everything lit, and it will limit strain on your budget. Unplugging overnight is also good for fire safety.
Enjoy the Warmth of Friends and Family
Whether it’s the neighbors over to decorate cookies, or family for dinner, with a house full of people, the space will be warm with love and, well, heat! You don’t need additional heat if people keep the house cozy naturally.
Give Thoughtfully
If you give gifts like electronics, try Energy Star-certified models. For toys, choose items that don’t require batteries. Parents will thank you when their kids receive gifts that don’t beep! If there is a “must have” battery operated item, include rechargeable batteries.
Know someone who loves energy-saving tips? A great gift might be a smart thermostat, guaranteed to help save energy year-round! Happy Holidays, and happy savings!
