Keeping your home comfortable while keeping your bills down can be a bit of a challenge at times. There are, however, steps you can take to shave dollars off your bill each month, while not sacrificing your comfort. Here are 10 energy-saving tips to get you started:
- Turn your water heater temperature down to 120 degrees. If your water heater is a main draw of energy, you may even want to replace your water heater with a more energy efficient one.
- Turn off lights and ceiling fans when not in use.
- Clean your air conditioner or furnace filter regularly. Not only will this save you money by making your HVAC system more efficient, keeping your HVAC filter clean is important for your health.
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher and have the thermostat fan set on auto while cooling your home. Set it up to 82 degrees or higher when you go out to save even more energy. If you need certain areas of the house cooler or warmer than others, look into a zoned heating and cooling system that will save you the energy of setting the whole house to the required temperature.
- Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower, keeping the thermostat fan set on auto while heating your home. When you go out, you can even lower it to 65 to save more. You can also lower it at night when you are in bed and won’t notice the difference.
- Skip the pre-washing phase of dishes and simply set the to wash in the dishwasher to save water and energy.
- Keep the lint filter of your clothes dryer clean.
- Always set the rinse cycle of your washing machine to cold. Wash clothes in warm water when possible.
- Set your dryer to automatically turn off when clothes are dry.
- When buying new appliances, look for Energy Star-certified models.
