If you’ve decided to install ductless mini splits in your Los Angeles area home or business, you’ve made a practical decision which will accommodate your comfort, efficiency and design standards, rather than you accommodating bulky ductwork extensions or a less-efficient heating and cooling solution.
Explore the various types of ductless systems and installation options that meet your needs.
Ductless System Basics
The original ductless mini splits, designed in the 1970s, were cooling-specific units that replaced noisy window units and space-consuming ductwork of central systems in homes and businesses with limited square footage. Today, ductless systems accommodate design options that extend heating and cooling to rooms, floors and entire homes.
- A ductless single-zoned system (classic ductless mini-split) provides space heating and cooling for new additions, sun rooms, home offices, hard-to-cool areas and converting attic, basement or garage spaces to living spaces.
- A ductless multi-zone system utilizes two or more indoor air-handling units (AHUs) to condition multiple zones.
- A flex-zoned system utilizes one AHU to condition two spaces, such as a bedroom and bathroom, or one large open area.
- A modular ductless configuration utilizes two or more outside units (compressor/condenser) linked to multiple AHUs to condition an entire energy-efficient home. Each AHU is size-specific (BTUs) to its zone.
Versatile Mounting Options
A thin conduit houses refrigerant and condensate lines, and connects the outside unit to each indoor AHU. You may enjoy virtually any interior design plan with the following AHU installation options:
- High-wall mounting is a no-fuss installation that places the AHU on the upper portion of a wall, allowing convenient access to the air filters, and out of the way of foot traffic.
- Ceiling cassettes offer flush air-supply grills in a hang ceiling or ceiling-recessed AHU. An AHU with self-cleaning air-filtration components is ideal for this installation.
- The slim duct installation conceals the AHU in the ceiling, wall or floor, and connects flush-mounted air-supply and air-return grills for promoting airflow through large rooms or two adjoined spaces (e.g. bedroom and walk-in closet).
