In the Los Angeles area, you will often experience very dry conditions at certain times of the year. While outside of your home this can make for pleasant activities, inside of your home is a different matter. In addition to the weather conditions, the heat pumps used to cool homes can also decrease the humidity inside. Dry air can have a very negative effect on those who live in the home, as well as on the home itself.
Effects of dryness
Dry air has many negative effects that are best avoided:
- Chapped, cracking lips
- Dry itchy skin
- Aggravation of allergy and asthma symptoms
- Nasty static shocks when you touch grounded object
- Cracking in wood furniture and floors
- Flaking paint
If you are still dealing with dry air in your home, it may be time to consider a investing in humidifier to solve your problem.
Portable humidifiers
Portable humidifiers are small units that can be positioned in any room in your home to add greater humidity in a particular area. Portable units are less expensive that a whole house system, but will leave you dealing with dry air in any room you’re not currently humidifying. Portable units can also make the room it’s in home far too humid, and they require that the homeowner clean and disinfect the unit each day.
Whole house humidifiers
A whole house humidifier is tied directly into your HVAC system and expels the water vapor it creates into the conditioned air that comes out of the registers. The sensors built into the unit monitor the air as it passes through your ducts. When the humidity drops too low, the system will release the vapor. Once installed, the homeowner has very little involvement in the process other than enjoying a comfortable home.
