How An Attic Fan Can Help Control Energy Costs And ComfortAs the southern California sun beats down on your roof, it causes the temperature of your attic to rise, which directly affects your cooling costs. Installing an attic fan will not only keep your cooling costs under control, but it will also help to keep your home more comfortable while adding years to the life of your HVAC system.

How can an attic fan do all that?

When the sun heats your roof, the heat is transferred into your attic where the temperature can easily reach 150 degrees or more. Soon the building components (trusses, rafters, ceilings, etc.) absorb the heat and transfer it into your living space — the same space you are paying to cool. Extra heat in your living space means your HVAC system has to work harder to cool the space.

Attic ventilation will remove some of the heat, but attic fans are the best way to draw the heat out. Most homes have passive ventilation (ridge vents, gable vents or dormer vents), but they don’t remove enough heat to have a positive effect. An attic fan with a thermostatic control will draw cooler air in through the passive vents and force hot air out. This lowers the temperature in your attic, resulting in reduced cooling costs.

Saving money and adding comfort are not the only benefits of an attic fan:

  • With less work to do, your HVAC system will enjoy a longer life span.
  • Your attic will be more “storage friendly,” with lower temperatures and lower humidity.
  • Lower temperature means less moisture. This reduces the risk of structural damage and the growth of mold and mildew.

An attic fan is an investment that will pay off in lower energy bills, a more comfortable home and longer life for your HVAC system.
