If you’re looking to slash your energy bills and make your home more energy efficient, you need to start with your air conditioning system. Keep in mind, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your air conditioner needs to be replaced. Your A/C system consists of several components that must work in unison if you are going to save.
Your ducts play a vital role in balancing airflow and temperature throughout your home. They have to be sized specifically for the needs of your home through meticulous, accurate calculations.
- Manual J – Before beginning to size your ducts, every contractor should perform load calculations according the Manual J specifications. This tells them exactly how much conditioned air each room needs and whether or not there are problems with the airflow in your current system.
- Manual D – Your HVAC technician should be well-versed in Manual D. It covers every aspect of duct design and sizing, from the tools required to synchronizing the ductwork with the air conditioner.
- Room-specific sizing – You don’t want to pump the same amount of air into every room. The ducts leading to each room should be sized to deliver the perfect amount of air necessary for each area. This helps balance the temperature and airflow throughout your house, which will make you feel more comfortable and decrease the demand on your A/C.
- Synchronize with other equipment – This is more complex than simply installing large ducts for a large A/C. The supply and return registers must efficiently deliver air to each room and also return air to the air conditioner so it can repeat the process. The blower, motor, fans and layout of the ducts must also be taken into account. Otherwise, you will have unbalanced airflow, which strains your system and makes it less efficient.
