AroundClock 10.1.13As we approach fall in Los Angeles, it is time to start thinking about your end-of-summer A/C maintenance needs. With a few simple steps you can make sure that your A/C system will be ready for next cooling season, and by performing proper maintenance, you will also help extend the life of your system.

One of the most important parts of any A/C unit is the filter. A clean filter allows the A/C unit to cool more efficiently, because it does not need to work as hard to move air. Whether you have central air or a window unit, the filter should be checked monthly. At the end of summer, this is even more important. When the filter clogs on a central air unit, replace it with a new filter. On window units, the filter usually needs only to be washed, air dried and reinstalled.

Like a refrigerator, A/C units also have coils and radiating fins. When these become clogged with dust and other debris, they should be cleaned to allow more-efficient heat transfer. Using a semi-stiff nylon brush, gently loosen foreign debris from between the fins, being careful not to bend any. Using a low-pressure garden hose, rinse the mess away. If the A/C is a window unit allow it to fully dry before storing it as part of your end-of-summer A/C maintenance schedule. Now would also be a good time to remove any plants or other items that are within 18 inches of the cooling coils.

Check the electrical cords and coolant lines for any obvious damage, and have repairs done, if necessary. If you notice any obvious air leaks, seal them, because it will help not only the A/C, but the heating system perform better as well. For central air systems, the end-of-summer A/C maintenance list should also include a professional inspection of the entire system.
