Yes, You Can Cut Your Energy Consumption This WinterKeep yourself warm this winter by bundling up with all the cash you can save from cutting down your energy costs. With a wide range of options, cutting your energy consumption down is relatively simple. As long as you keep up with maintenance and the appropriate equipment upgrades, anyone can accomplish it. Here are a few ways how:

Use an energy-efficient furnace

  • Have a programmable thermostat installed. You can save up to 10 percent of your energy consumption by lowering the temperature of your home while you’re away.
  • Be sure to check for high annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings. Minimum requirements are 78 percent and Energy Star has models with ratings as high as 90 percent.
  • Energy-efficient heat pumps can lower electricity costs by 30-40 percent compared to other heating systems. They provide three times as much heat than the energy they consume.
  • Clean or replace filters as recommended.

Use your home to your advantage

  • Seal all duct leaks that may exist and install insulation. Sealing leaks prevents heating unconditioned spaces such as your attic. Overall, the savings from having insulation far outweigh the initial cost.
  • Keep blinds and drapes open during the day to allow for natural light to help heat your home. Close them at night to assist with insulation. The sun has ample amounts of energy; let it take some of the work load from your heating unit.
  • Make sure that no heating registers are being obstructed. Don’t suffocate your system’s life support.

Additional heating options

  • Geothermal heat pumps can reduce energy consumption up to 60 percent! They take ground water and run it through an elaborate piping system to heat your home.
  • Passive solar heating. This design consists of arranging windows to maximize daylight to assist in heating your home.
  • Natural gas and oil heating. Due to technological advances, many systems are now being made to greatly increase energy savings.
