Water conservation is a wise choice not only for your own home, but for the community as a whole. Conserving water will reduce energy costs and cut down on pollution levels in local lakes, rivers, and watersheds.

Here are six steps you can take to immediately start conserving water in your home.

  1. Stop faucet leaks – Check faucets and pipes for leaks and small drips. A few drops of water may not seem like much, but even a tiny leak can waste many gallons of water a day.
  2. Don’t use toilets for trash disposal – Avoid putting cigarette butts, tissues, small bits of trash or other objects in your toilet. You waste five to seven gallons of water every time you flush these foreign objects.
  3. Stop toilet leaks – Check your toilet for leaks by placing a drop or two or food of coloring in the water in the tank. Do not flush the toilet for at least 30 minutes. If the food coloring is gone after a half-hour, there is a leak that needs to be fixed somewhere within the toilet’s system.
  4. Monitor water meter – Record the reading on the water meter. Do not use any water in the house for two hours, then check the meter again; if the reading has changed, you have a water leak.
  5. Use efficient plumbing fixtures – Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. These devices cut down on water flow but keep enough water coming to perform normal household tasks.
  6. Insulate water pipes – Install insulation around your hot water pipes. Check your local hardware store or HVAC supplier for insulation designed to fit pipes. By insulating your hot water lines, you’ll save energy and get faster access to your hot water.
