With winter on the horizon, it’s time to make sure that your home equipment is ready to not only keep you and your family warm this winter, but also keep your home energy efficient. If you follow these strategies, you will be able to save more energy all winter long.
- Add insulation. This map will help you figure out how much insulation your attic needs so that you effectively prevent heat loss.
- Upgrade your heating equipment. Replacing old heating equipment with a new system that is rated at least 90 AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) will help you stay toasty while also saving money on energy costs.
- Utilize government incentives. Tax credits and rebates are in place to encourage people to upgrade to more energy-efficient equipment by helping with the burden of the upfront cost.
- Seal your air ducts. Covering holes, cracks and gaps in your ducts with duct mastic will prevent air from escaping before it reaches your supply ducts. You can lose up to 20 percent of your air due to poor leak sealing.
- Block out drafts. You can use plastic insulation and caulk on your windows to help seal them better. Weatherstripping around the perimeter of your doors also helps keep warm air inside.
- Hire a trusted HVAC contractor. Whether you need minimal maintenance work, or are looking for someone to help with a new installation, make sure your HVAC contractor has a solid reputation.
- Change your air filters. If you allow your filters to go unchanged for too long, dust and other debris will accumulate, making them less efficient at capturing new particles that enter your air system. It also makes it more difficult for air to pass through, which in turn overworks your air system and drives up energy costs.
- Use an energy monitor. These devices help you keep track of how much energy you are using so that you can cut back when needed.
