If you plan on enjoying a comfortable home environment during the summer, having an air conditioning system that fits the needs of your home is a must. Before you go ahead and buy an air conditioner, take the time to learn about the main benefits of A/C units and the various types currently available on the market, so you’ll know exactly what to look for. Here are the four main types of A/C systems that you should consider:
- Split systems – the most commonly used air conditioning systems in the U.S., split systems consist of an evaporator coil and a condenser coil. While the former is placed inside the home and used to reduce the levels of heat and moisture from the air, the latter resides outside the house and is used to release the heat. The outdoor component of this system also contains a compressor that pumps the refrigerant between the evaporator and condenser coils.
- Packaged central air conditioners – these A/C systems feature a combined design in which the condenser, evaporator and compressor are placed in a single unit. The units are regularly placed on the roof or near the foundation. Packaged central air conditioners are suitable for small-sized commercial buildings.
- Heat pumps – these systems represent an efficient alternative to traditional systems. In contrast to split systems that only work to provide cool air, heat pumps can also be used for heating purposes. However, heat pumps are generally suitable for mild climates and are not recommended for areas that consistently feature temperatures below freezing.
- Ductless mini-split systems – these systems feature a compressor and condenser on the outdoors, along with indoor units. They are suitable for homes without ductwork and allow independent temperature control for each room. They are also more efficient, as they eliminate ductwork energy loss.
