Pet allergies can quickly turn time with your furry friend into an unpleasant situation filled with itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and stuffy or runny nose. Thankfully, there are ways you can reduce the pet allergens in your home’s air, allowing you and your four-legged friend to live harmoniously together.
Reducing Pet Allergies
- Reduce dander at its source. Keeping your pet clean with weekly baths using mild shampoo helps reduce pet allergies. Also, consider wiping your pet down between baths with premoistened wipes made for pets.
- Using an air purifier can help reduce the amount of dander in your home’s air. Contact a trusted HVAC company for recommendations on which air purifier is best for your situation.
- Wash your hands immediately after petting your furry friend. Furthermore, avoid touching your eyes or face until you have washed with an antibacterial soap. This helps keep the exposure to a minimum and results in less watery noses and itchy eyes.
- Eliminate fleas, mites and other irritants. These annoying pests cause your pets to scratch, which introduces dander into the air. By getting rid of them, you will keep your pets happy and reduce the amount of allergens contaminating your indoor air quality.
- Consider replacing carpets and drapes with hardwood floors and blinds. Fibers in the carpeting and curtains attract and hold on to the dander, while hardwood floors and blinds do not.
- Keep your pet out of the bedroom. This tip may be one of the hardest for pet owners to sick with. If you find that you cannot keep your pet out of your bedroom, consider using pillow and mattress covers designed for dander and allergies. Also, wash the bedding once a week in the hottest water temperature for the specific fabric.
