Enjoy a greener holiday season this year in your Los Angeles home by putting a few key energy-saving tips into practice. The holidays are notorious for upping energy bills thanks to increased furnace use among other energy “vampires.” Check out a few tips to use this season:
- Programmable thermostat: Consider installing a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one, as they make it easy to control the temperature in your home and therefore save money and energy. Set the temperature a few degrees lower before bedtime, before you leave for work or when away to keep utility bills low. Look for an Energy Star thermostat for best results, and place the device out of direct sunlight or in a room with poor insulation. A two-zone thermostat may be your best bet depending on the size of your home, as you can set the temperature in different parts of the house to your liking.
- Heating system equipment: Living in a warmer climate can sometimes mean lax maintenance and inspection concerning heating systems. If you plan to utilize your heating system frequently this winter, it’s a good idea to have a service professional inspect the system prior to colder weather setting in. It is also recommended that your system is inspected for efficiency on a yearly basis.
- Warm clothing: If the weather is temperate enough, you might not even have to use your furnace a lot! Wearing warm clothing and using blankets and throws will keep you comfortable without the added expense of running your furnace.
- Insulation: Enjoy a greener holiday season in a home that is well-insulated. Adding insulation during construction or renovation means your home will stay temperate a lot longer, and your furnace will not have to work as hard, meaning lower energy bills. Wall and roof insulation are recommended, as is the installation of double-glazed windows.
