Harmful particles are in the air all around us. These can be reduced, in some cases eradicated, in the home by using an air cleaner.
Machines marketed as “air fresheners” are not air cleaners. Such equipment can create ozone as a byproduct, or deliberately introduce it into the airstream to attack odors or to create a sweet smell. Ozone is a lung irritant, so allergy sufferers should avoid this technology. What’s left to try?
• HEPA Filters. This acronym stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” Non-HEPA filters capture a variety of pollutants up to 0.3 micrometers, but for particles smaller than that, homeowners should turn to HEPA filters, which capture nearly 100 percent of particles this size.
• Activated Carbon. The “P” in HEPA, which stands for particulate, conveys that the filter only removes solid particulates, such as pollen and dust. HEPA filters do not remove gases. Homeowners with allergies to gaseous pollutants, such as tobacco smoke and Volatile Organic Compounds, should consider activated carbon filters.
• CADR. One of the most important acronyms to understand is CADR; an air purifier’s Clean Air Delivery Rate. Expressed as a numerical value, the higher the number, the faster the machine will filter air volumes (this is not a measure of the machine’s thoroughness). CADR measures clinical through-flow regardless of what technology the filter employs, taking into account the filtering device’s performance with both solids and gases.
• AAFA. “Asthma and Allergy Friendly” describes a machine certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The certification is awarded only to equipment that measurably reduces allergens in the airstream, rather than just holding or redistributing them.
Choosing air cleaners can be confusing, but making the correct decision is vital. CADR only rates portable air purifiers, while HEPA filters can be installed directly into your home’s HVAC system — although not without significant changes to your equipment due to reduced airflow. Consult a professional to see if this advisable with your HVAC system.
