Mold
Mildew and mold can create a nasty smell but sometimes mold growth can go unnoticed for quite some time. Mildew, funguses, mold and other undesirable pollutants will thrive in high humidity environments or near sources of moisture. Have your home checked for plumbing leaks and kill mold growth with ammonia, diluted bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless and cannot be seen by the naked eye. If you already own carbon monoxide detectors, test them to ensure they’re working properly. Otherwise you may want to look into getting new carbon dioxide detectors installed to detect elevated levels of this potentially dangerous gas. Carbon monoxide detectors should be located in close proximity to heat sources like the kitchen stove, water heater or your fireplace. Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause lung cancer or even death.
Radon
Radon is a gas that is naturally emitted from the soil and can seep into the home through the lower levels of your home. Sealing air leaks in the basement and drainage system may help solve the problem. Like carbon monoxide, radon has no odor and cannot be detected without a radon detection kit. You may alternatively choose to have an HVAC technician check your home’s radon levels and fix the problem.
