You can accomplish all this at once by utilizing Home Advisor‘s energy-saving tips for southern California residents.

  • Seal air leaks in your home’s exterior. It takes a lot of energy to heat and cool all of the air in a house. But it takes much, much more energy to heat and cool all of the air in the valley — which is what you might be unintentionally doing if your home leaks air. Having those leaks sealed can lead to significant energy savings.
  • Seal air leaks in your HVAC system. Air ducts can leak out 1/5 of the air that passes through your HVAC system, meaning that your air conditioner or heater may be working 20 percent harder than it has to. Seal those leaks with a long-lasting sealant or metal-backed tape (not duct tape).
  • Check your insulation. A home in Los Angeles or the San Fernando Valley should have attic insulation of R-30 or more and wood frame insulation of R-13. (If you are not familiar with what R-values for insulation mean, feel free to contact us for assistance.)
  • Use a programmable thermostat. Assuming you are not at the house 24 hours a day, a programmable thermostat can provide energy savings by adjusting the A/C or heat while you are away.
  • Use high-efficiency HVAC equipment. Thinking about replacing your A/C or furnace? Look for models with a high SEER (for air conditioning) or AFUE (for furnaces). Both are measures of how efficient the equipment is at turning energy into cooling or heating output.
  • Use high-efficiency water heaters. A typical, traditional water heater is responsible for 15-25 percent of a home’s energy consumption. Switching to a new water heater, such as an efficient tankless model, can help reduce that number.
