Summer is nearing its end in the greater Los Angeles area right now, but with more heat coming, the last thing you want is an interruption in your air-conditioning service.  Here are some things you can do to make sure you stay cool all summer long and into the warm autumn days.

Change Your Air Filters
Your air filters collect dust that enters your home comfort system; they prevent this dust from recirculating through your home.  But when too much dust has accumulated, it becomes difficult for the air to pass through.  This causes your HVAC system to require more energy, making it less efficient.  Replacing your air filters monthly will not only help you keep your system running efficiently, but it will make sure that your filters capture as many pollutants as possible.

Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clean
Sweep away grass clippings, leaves, dirt and any other debris from your outdoor unit so that they don’t affect the performance of your condensing coil.  This is the component responsible for cooling the air, so it is important that it is not compromised.  Rinsing the unit down with a water hose occasionally will help prevent dirt from accumulating on it as well.

Unclog Your Condensate Drain
Poke a stiff wire through the drain to clear out any blockage.  This will increase your air conditioner’s ability to properly dehumidify the air.

Schedule Preventive Maintenance
Just like a vehicle requires tuneups and oil changes, your air conditioner needs to be inspected annually to make sure that it is operating properly.  During this inspection, worn-down parts will be replaced before they create problems, components will get cleaned and everything will be adjusted so that your air conditioning is operating as efficiently as possible. This can create substantial differences in the comfort level of your home.  It can also sometimes create enough savings on your energy bill to eventually offset the cost of the maintenance itself.
