Tankless Water Heaters Are More Efficient: How Many Does Your Home Require? All tankless water heaters are more efficient than any electric- or gas-heated storage water heater. In fact, with the right combination of tankless units, you can reach efficiencies of 50 percent over storage water heaters.

Tankless water heaters don’t expend energy to maintain the temperature of stored hot water. When hot water is turned on, water flows through the unit and is heated by an electric element or burner on demand. When the hot water is turned off, so are the electric element and burner.

Number of tanks

The size and number of tankless units needed for your home depends primarily on how energy efficient you want your system to be. One gas-heated whole-house tankless unit can meet the water-heating needs of most households. However, it is not the most efficient. A series of smaller electric-heated units is much more efficient, upwards of 50 percent. Another benefit is that by combining a variety of tankless units throughout your home, you receive hot water faster at the outlet. This saves water as well as energy.

Sized to fit

Tankless water heaters are available as single point-of-use (small), multi point-of-use (medium), and whole-house units (large, suitcase size). The small units are for heating one outlet, such as a bathroom sink. The unit is installed conveniently next to or under the sink for fast hot-water delivery. A medium-sized unit could heat water for the kitchen sink and dishwasher. A whole-house unit could provide hot water for two bathrooms and a washing machine. This is just an example to give you a picture of the possibilities for your home.

More benefits

Having more than one tankless unit safeguards against repair down-time. If one tankless unit needs repair, you still have others in the home to suit your needs until it’s fixed — much different than the problems of a burst storage tank. Tankless units last nearly twice as long as storage tanks as well.
