High efficiency air filters and even UV lights can help improve the quality of your indoor air, but without a carbon monoxide detector, you are still at risk from something much more serious than dust mites or pollen. These leaks are completely odorless, potentially deadly and impossible to detect without a proper detector. If you do not yet have one installed in your home, you should get one immediately.

Before shopping for carbon monoxide detectors, you should understand how various models work, so that you get one that best fits your needs. Some models can plug directly into a power outlet but will be inoperative in the event of a power outage. If you are looking for a wall-powered detector, be sure to get one that has a battery backup.

Other models are powered only by batteries and don’t need to be plugged in. You can be more discreet with where you position these: on bookshelves, nightstands or tables. You need to make sure that they are equipped with a loud, audible warning that will indicate when the batteries are running low or if the sensor needs to be fixed, so that you can address the problem promptly.

Once you have your carbon monoxide detector purchased, you need to be careful with where you put it. You need to have it either in your bedroom or within 15 feet of the door. This way it will be able to easily and quickly wake you in case of a late night leak detection.

There are also models that are built to serve as both a carbon monoxide and smoke detector. This means that you do not need as many safety devices around your house. One possible drawback is that they have to be hardwired into your home’s electrical system and must be mounted to the ceiling to ensure they properly detect smoke.
