With all of the advancements in air conditioning technology, most individuals have overlooked one of the best pieces of equipment for saving energy: ceiling fans. With ceiling fans in your household, you will be able to reduce the workload on your air conditioning system and lower your utility bills dramatically.

Ceiling fans operate by circulating air and creating a draft. The draft created by the ceiling fan allows you to turn up your thermostat by as much as four degrees without any resulting loss in comfort. In fact, in temperate regions that do not get excessively hot, a ceiling fan can sometimes work in place of your air conditioner.

By using ceiling fans to complement your air conditioner, or even by using them in place of your A/C system just a few times each month, you will be able to reduce your monthly utility bills.

Some Guidelines to Follow When Purchasing and Installing a Ceiling Fan

  • Fans operate the most efficiently when they are installed in a room whose ceiling is at least eight feet high.
  • A ceiling fan works best when it is situated 7-9 feet above the floor and 10-12 inches below the ceiling.
  • You should always purchase a fan according to the size of the room. A fan that has a diameter of 36-44 inches will work best in rooms that are no bigger than 225 square feet. For larger rooms, a fan that is 52 inches in diameter is required.
  • Multiple fans are needed in rooms that exceed 18 feet.
  • A larger fan can function at a lower speed and still have the same output as a smaller fan.
  • Always choose Energy Star models. Energy Star ceiling fans function 20 percent more effectively than traditional fans.
