Finding the Right HVAC Contractor: Follow These TipsWhen you’re in the market for a new HVAC contractor, you don’t want to choose just anyone. After all, your cooling and heating equipment are essential for your household’s comfort level, not to mention the costs involved when energy is being wasted by inefficient systems. With this in mind, here are several tips to follow that will make your search much easier:

  • Contact people you know — There’s a good chance that someone you know uses an HVAC contractor whom he or she likes. If this is the case, it could make your search extremely short.
  • Look for NATE certification — NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification signifies that the contractor represents the utmost professionalism and industry knowledge. Only choose a contractor who has gone through this rigorous training and testing.
  • Solid energy usage estimation — A well-trained technician will be able to provide you with a solid estimate as to the energy usage and operating cost of any cooling or heating equipment that they install.
  • Topnotch professionalism — Your technician should be professional every step of the way, from the initial search for a new contractor to the actual completion of a project.
  • Installation of high-efficiency equipment — A good contractor will encourage you to install high-efficiency cooling and heating equipment whenever possible. If they don’t, this could be an indication that they don’t keep up on HVAC technology.
  • Use of a written proposal — Even if a contractor’s word is bond, the company should supply you with a written proposal that includes all costs (equipment and labor), time completion estimates, equipment to be installed, etc.
  • All-encompassing bid — Multiple bids are encouraged, but don’t look at only the price. The technician should include all details, such as warranties, energy efficiency plans, etc. Also don’t trust bids that seem too low.
