Sometimes the best way to save money is to buy something new. Sounds kind of nonsensical, but it’s true when the new thing can save you money in the long run. If you’re paying through the nose for energy costs, you probably should consider upgrading to a more efficient heating system to reduce your energy bills.

If you’re living in an older home with an older furnace, you’re probably paying high energy bills for an oversized furnace. Furnaces installed prior to 1980 are usually too big, wasting energy and wasting your money. You can do a small test to determine whether your furnace is too big for your home. On a particularly cold day, listen to the furnace operate. Does it run for 15 minutes and then turn off for another 15 minutes? If the answer is yes, your furnace is too big. Your next step will be to contact a professional HVAC contractor who can help you figure out the correct size for a heating system that fits your home. The contractor can also do some calculations and figure out how much you’ll save every month on heating costs.

You can upgrade to either a newer, more efficient furnace or switch to a heat pump. If you choose to purchase a new furnace, be sure to select one that has at least 95 AFUE for the most efficiency, thus making your heating system upgrade a worthy investment.
