If you want your HVAC system to work optimally and you don’t want to pay high power bills unnecessarily, you need to check out heat pump maintenance. When the pump is regularly cleaned, it will work better and maintain the set temperature as well. While you can a professional to service it  semi-annually, there are some tasks you can perform yourself.

Do-it-yourself tasks

Clogged filters, coils and fans increase the power bill, reduce air quality and can lead to health problems. They also shorten the life of the equipment and that’s why heat pump maintenance is very important. You should take the following steps:

  • If your filters can be easily removed and cleaned, do so once a month, or as needed.
  • If they need to be changed, you can change them yourself.
  • Check that there is no blockage of air flow.
  • Keep the outdoor condensing coil clean with a brush or a vacuum.
  • Clean the fan. Make sure you turn off the motor first.

Depending on your usage and the weather conditions, you should carry out these small chores at least monthly.

When you need a professional

A technician has all the instruments needed to carry out various checks and see that everything is working as it should. He can also carry out repairs where required. A professional should do the following:

  • Check for duct leaks and seal them.
  • Inspect the electric points and wires.
  • See that the motors are well-oiled and the belts are tight.
  • Do a more thorough internal and external cleaning.
  • Check that the refrigerant has not leaked, leading to inefficient cooling.
  • See that the thermostat is working properly.
