A ductless mini split is an air-source heat pump (or A/C) with redesigned components which utilize minimal space. Ductless systems also offer homeowners nice extras and features, such as multi-zoned cooling and heating, unbeatable energy efficiency compared to typical heat pumps, and ductless mini splits cool and heat spaces where extending ductwork is impractical or for homes with no duct system at all.
Ductless mini split components
A ductless mini split foregoes the need for a ductwork system by utilizing sleek air handlers installed within the living spaces, which are connected to the outdoor compressor/condenser by a thin conduit. The conduit contains the tubing to transport the refrigerant between the indoor evaporator(s) and the outdoor condenser heat exchangers.
The conduit also contains the power supply and drainage system needed to deliver cooled or heated air directly within the living spaces without the chance for heat-energy losses common through thin duct walls. Moreover, the conduit only requires a small hole in the perimeter of your home’s shell to link all the components.
Versatile applications
There are many home remodeling situations where a ductless mini split is the best option for providing additional or supplemental cooling and heating, including the following:
- Reduce the cost of a new addition with ductless cooling and heating in lieu of extending ducts and upgrading the primary cooling/heating system.
- Temperature regulation is needed in specific areas within a home, such as a home office, media room, family room, upstairs or attic room and more.
- Many homes in greater Los Angeles area have no duct system at all. A ductless mini split makes perfect sense for these homes.

Ductless mini splits support one to four indoor air handlers, featuring multi-zoned cooling and heating for occupants in each zone. This maximizes comfort and saves energy by allowing zoned cooling and heating in designated zones rather than the entire home if desired.
